Connecting to zedboard

I've been following the hello_world tutorial and have everything going perfectly until it's time to run it on the board. I've tried 5 different times, making sure to follow the steps exactly and I still get error messages. I'm running into this one now, and I can't find any documentation on it.

"Unable to connect to ps7_cortexa9

Failed to connect to Xilinx hw_server. Check if the hw_server is running and correct TCP port is used."

There are micro USB cables connected to J14(UART) and J17(PROG), JP7-JP11 are grounded, and JP2, JP3, and JP6 are all shorted.

I'm running a Windows 7 64-bit OS.

It gives 3 troubleshooting hints: 1. Check whether board is connected to the system properly. [I'm pretty sure it is-when JP9 & JP10 are set to 3V3, I can access the Linux kernel on the SD card). 2. In case of zynq board, check whether Digilent/Xilinx cable switch settings are correct [I'm assuming that's referring to JP7-JP11... They're configured correctly I believe]. 3. If you are using Xilinx Platform cable USB, ensure that status LED is green [I don't think I'm using that].

Please help!

Thanks

Zack

how to find the hardware server these days

I believe you that the HW server was under Xilinx Tools back in 2013 - but does anyone know where it can be found these days?   - it doesn't appear that there is any hw_server on the linux that the Zynq board starts up in and I have not been able to find such a thing on the SDK tool set I loaded in the last few days.

Hello Erickrieg,

Hello Erickrieg,

From what you are asking, I think you may have a driver problem. The drivers for your zedboard get installed when you install your Xilinx Tools. If it is your first time plugging in your device, you must give your PC time to enumerate and recognize the device the first time you plug it in.

I would like you to look at a few things for me.

1. In your device manager when your Zedboard is set up in JTAG boot, do the folloing ports/USB controllers squared in red exist? Please refer to picture below. If they do not, which ones are you mssing?

2. If that is all setup properly, your Xilinx Tools when you first use them will pop up a bunch of secrity messages about the firewall. If you did not accept those, your tools and cables are not going to work. Please refer to this post to solve this potential issue - http://zedboard.org/zh-hant/node/9991

3. If you would like information in regards to HW_SERVER, please refer to the document below, specifcally page 22.

Same problem

I have the same problem but openning the hardware server do not solve my problem. Do you have other suggestions??

Maybe...

I'll tell you how I got through a few roadblocks, maybe one of them is yours.

1. Make sure your switch is on and you're connected to power :D And try power-cycling the board before you start the hardware server.

2. Make sure your jumpers are configured correctly. The only thing you need to worry about is JP7 - JP11 if you haven't adjusted anything else, but better make sure just in case. I'll just go through all of them:
JP1 open
JP2 shorted
JP3 shorted
JP6 shorted
JP7 connected to GND
JP8 connected to GND
JP9 connected to GND
JP10 connected to GND
JP11 connected to GND
JP12 (XADC) open
JP13 open
J21 (current sense) open
VADJ shorted at 1V8

3. Make sure you have the Cypress drivers installed and UART drivers installed.

4. When you connect the 2 USBs to the ZedBoard, you should see an additional COM port open up. You should also see the "Cypress USB to UART Adapter" pop up in the device manager under "CypressUsbConsoleWindowsDriver" (I'm assuming you're running windows). If not, you need to install additional drivers.

That's all I can think of off the top of my head. Let me know if any of that helps.

Thank you for comment.

Thank you for comment.
firstly my mini usb JTAG port do not work properly that when I connect the cable to computer, it could not communicate through this port. Therefore I started to use the other JTAG port with a Platform Cable USB. That's way I started to communicate with Zynq. :)

I have the same problem. And

I have the same problem. And I don't even have the option "Launch Hardware Server" under the "Xilinx Tools" menu in SDK. Could anyone give me a hint?

I am using ISE 14.4.

Program FPGA

I switched to the 14.3 version for various reasons, and there's not a "Launch Hardware Server" option in the Xilinx Tools menu either. I don't remember exactly, but does that message still appear when you try "Program FPGA" in the Xilinx Tools menu? This will configure the hardware in the device, which needs to happen before you load a program onto it.

Launch HW Server

I am using 14.5 and working perfect. You just need to "Launch HW server" from "Xilinx Tools" tab in SDK.

Hello Rasoo,

Hello Rasoo,

Here are a few things for you to start looking at.

1. Do you have a microUSB cable connected between your host machine and the Zedboards JTAG connector?

2. Is your Zedboard set to JTAG boot?

3. The Vivado version the tutorial was created in is Vivado 2014.2, try creating and running your design using that version.

4. At :43 seconds into the tutorial they select the ZC702 board, did you make sure to select the zedboard instead?

5. At what point do you encounter this error? When your run the program or when you program the bitstream?

Also since you a new to this platform, I would HIGHLY suggest you go through our Develping Zynq Hardware/Software Speedways to get a strong undertstanding of when you can do with Vivado and SDK. http://zedboard.org/support/trainings-and-videos

For any future assistance please post your questions over at the Digilent forum as they are the main point of contact for education support.

Thank you so much for your

Thank you so much for your response. I have figured out that actually the problem was uart cable driver. I have installed it and successfully done for 2016.6 version. It was a silly post from me :). I will follow your suggested links.

Vivado 2016.4

Hello,
I am running Vivado 2016.4 and when i run the Hardware Manager and try co connect to the Zedboard I get the following error:
ERROR: [Labtoolstcl 44-469] There is no current hw_target.
I have checked a bunch o things and they all seem to be ok but some have some problems:
1 - I have installed the cable drivers, but when i go to the installer again the check box is unmarked.
2 - I have installed the cypress driver but in the device manager i don't see the USB serial converter mentioned in a previous post although I have the COM port and the USB too UART adaptor.
3 - The jumper J7 to J11 are all set to GND, the cable is connected and the board power in ON.
4 - There is no command in Vivado 2016.4 to start the Launch the Hardware Server, but is seems to start automatically when you try to connect. The process is running, and Vivado reports it connects to the server but there is no device connected to it.
Can any one help me?
Thanks

Hello Paclopes,

Hello Paclopes,

In the future I would suggest you make your own thread post instead of tagging your question and circumstance on to the end of an existing forum post. This will ensure that it is not missed by the community.

Have you tried going through lab 8 of the Developing Zynq Hardware Speedway we offer? It covers how to use the Hardware Manager.

http://zedboard.org/course/developing-zynq%C2%AE-7000-all-programmable-s...

Unfortunatly I do not have Vivado 2016.4 installed on my computer to see if it is a Vivado issue. I will install it today and report back to you somtime tomorrow. In the mean time here are some links that may help you solve your issue.

Incorrect USB connector

Well I found out what was wrong. A silly mistake from my part. I was using the wrong micro USB connector and did not noticed the correct one (J17). It now seems to be working fine. Sory, for the trouble.
Thanks,

Zedboard with Xilinx SDK

Yes i have connected computer USB port and JTAG Micro Port J17 with JTAG mode JP7 to JP11 GND
and i also installed Cypress driver for UART properly but as i open Device Manager to check the status inside the PORT it shows USB Serial PORT (COM 6) instead of CYPRESS Serial PORT.
So what should be the next step....
